The last few years have seen a growth in languages which use the JVM. Gone are the days when only niche languages like Jython or Beanshell were the only serious alternatives. A new crop of languages has emerged to leverage the JVM and its toolset, coinciding with an increased level of frustration regarding the slow pace of change in the Java language proper.

This talk will give an overview of the current language on the JVM landscape, focusing on two of the most popular - if wildly different languages, Scala and Clojure.

This session will be of interest to anyone with a passing interest in the future of the JVM, and the new crop of languages that are being built for it. No prior knowledge of Scala or Clojure is required, although if you have any you may be able to help the speaker out :-)

We'd like to thank the university for allowing us to use their facilities.
